According to a recent report from Indeed Hiring Lab economist Nick Bunker, today’s college graduates are prioritizing passion over pay. Just four years ago graduates were more concerned about finding a steady well-paying job after college. Due to an expanding labor market, grads are beginning to choose careers in fields that genuinely interest them. The stability offered from non-traditional job roles is pushing recent grads to pursue careers in more arts, media, and social service sectors than ever before. Being successful doesn’t particularly mean finding a typical nine-to-five like it used to. With the growth of social media, technology, and social service organizations, it is now possible to be self-made doing what you love.

Freelance work, social media influencing, and non-profit responsibilities are growing in popularity due to the labor market developing today. Although occupations in engineering, such as mechanical engineer, industrial engineer, chemical engineer, and civil engineers are still some of the more popular careers for post grads, the amount of people choosing to pursue their passion over pay is higher than ever before. So don’t worry about making your parents proud, consider doing what makes you happy and give your life purpose. Most Americans stay in the workforce for over 45 years, so make the most of your time and trust your heart. Follow your passion and start doing something that makes you excited to go to work every day.
